In my experience of the bands I work with, a large number of them play the same old venues to the same handful of customers. This is especially true when they're starting out.

As you say, the fan base is the lifeblood for any band serious about music as a career. Knowing how to raise your bands profile via various media HAS to go hand in hand with learning how to get gigs.
