The Indie Diet

Okay, remember...eat very few carbs, no sugar, more protein, less fat. Eat nuts, don't eat meat, eat fish, don't eat fish, it has mercury. Red meat is bad, red meat is good, have a glass of wine a day, DON"T drink! alcohol kills...

Well, welcome to the music business...........HUH?

That's right...the music business. The music business is a lot like a diet. When it comes to doing the right thing for your career, it may not be the right thing ALL THE TIME.

Finding the right balance in your career and your activities is more important than just doing the right thing. When it comes to marketing, you need to deal with a lot of different things such as radio, publicity, gigs, newsletters, websites, advertising, etc. Knowing when to fill up (aka focus) on one thing over another is crucial to the health of your career. Spending all your time getting gigs and not putting any effort into how you communicate with and increase your fan base makes wasted effort. How many of you have played the same 10 venues to the same 30 people?? If your getting airplay or playing a gig, make sure you are complimenting that part of your diet with a healthy amount of publicity, advertising, personal appearances, hand shakes, letters, emails, etc? Your fans are the lifeblood of your career.
So remember, treat your career like your body. Eat right, exercise when you can, and do everything in moderation. Here's to your health!
